Drivers: Prepare for Roadcheck 2014

Drivers: Prepare for Roadcheck 2014

May 08 2014

Picture 051CVSA’s Roadcheck 2014, scheduled for June 3 – 5, is just around the corner and that means one thing: preparation!

We encourage you to be ready for an inspection and be aware of the most common violations, which include brake, light and tire issues. Additionally, as always, make sure you’re wearing your seatbelt, refraining from cell phone use and not speeding.

This year, we’re offering $25 to any current driver who has a Level 1 or Level 2 roadside inspection free of violations and warnings! Plus, though August 31, there is no limit to the number of clean inspections drivers can turn in, so feel free to take full advantage of this offer.

Receiving the $25 is simple – just email or scan the inspection report to your manager within 10 days of the inspection date.

For additional safety tips, check out CVSA’s Roadcheck Checklist for Drivers.

What Can You Find at J.B. Hunt?

What Can You Find at J.B. Hunt?

Apr 10 2014

IMG_7942Ken Fryar has driven for J.B. Hunt for only three years, but he knows this is where he wants to retire.

“I love driving for J.B. Hunt,” says the intermodal driver. “I don’t see me moving anywhere or anyplace.”

Ken started as a regional intermodal driver running out of Chicago and transferred to his current position as a local driver.

“The transition wasn’t bad, but it’s a big difference between moving regional freight and local freight. You’re in and out of the truck more. I move a lot of freight. So when I am working, I am moving.”

When asked what his favorite part is about driving local, Ken didn’t hesitate.

“Home time” he answered. “I love going home. I love if I want to see my daughter, I can. I can go out and see the guys and I get to ride my motorcycle a lot more than when I was a regional driver.”

Ken’s typical day as a driver includes him coming in around 6:00 am, getting his paperwork from his manager, Erin, grabbing breakfast, pre-tripping his truck and then heading out for the day.

“Once I get in the truck, it’s constant moving all day long. The work flow is very heavy, very steady and it’s consistent. If a driver’s looking for work, they come to J.B. Hunt. Believe me, it pays out.”

Another perk about driving local, Ken says, is having an onsite manager.

“This is like a family atmosphere—she (Erin) makes sure I’m taken care of. You can talk face to face and fix things. If the manager can’t fix it, it will go to the next person, but it’s not going to go past two steps. It’s going to get taken care of.”

Ken also trains new drivers. He gives his trainees a bit of advice.

“Every job has its ups and downs, but for the most part with J.B., the ups and downs I have, it’s nothing you can’t get over.” Ken also encourages drivers coming in from regional or OTR to keep at it and keep safety their first priority. “You’ve got to keep your eyes constantly moving,” Ken said. “A lot of city drivers don’t understand what we do.”

“At J.B. Hunt, I found home time. This company has a very bright future and I love what I do,” said Ken.

Maintenance Tip: Tractor Lines and Service Cords

Maintenance Tip: Tractor Lines and Service Cords

Nov 06 2013

Secured service lines- WITH TEXTWe pride ourselves on having the best drivers on the road at J.B. Hunt. Part of what makes us the best is our dedication to safety and that starts with our mainteneance department. Here’s a tip from Juan Ruiz, the Area Maintenance Manager in Stockton, CA.

When a tractor is bob‐tailing, it is important that the air service lines and electrical cord are properly secured in the Glad Hand Holder vs having the service lines and electrical cord being strapped down on the catwalk. This will prevent lines from coming loose and dragging on the road, causing air lines lines to be pinched, cut, or kinked or electrical cord could short out causing the trailer to not have any lights. This could cause a possible service failure or DOT shut down
if not noted during a pre-trip or post‐trip inspection. Unsecured service lines- with text

What safety tips do you have?
